Intermediate Level Urban Designer

PAU is accepting applications for a full-time, intermediate-level Urban Designer with 2-5 years of experience. The successful candidate will share our passion for design and innovation and will be committed to developing exemplary work in a self-motivated and collaborative manner.

Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to:

  • Working individually or collaboratively with teams; reporting to Project Leader and/or Principal and meeting project deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Generating detailed digital 3D models for use as a design tool, but also for representation and analysis.
  • Creating drawings and diagrams with a focus on narrative and analytical qualities. A range of media is encouraged but Creative Suite programs are a minimum requirement.
  • Preparing presentations and layouts of written material in InDesign for both internal process and communication with clients and stakeholders.
  • Conducting research on site history, context, regulatory regimes, and planning frameworks; and use this research to help develop project narrative.
  • Presenting material to clients and stakeholders virtually and in person.
  • Attending public meetings and other stakeholder outreach events and using those experiences to inform project development.
  • Maintaining files including drawings, documents, specifications, correspondences, and all other project materials in an organized manner following firm protocols.
  • Ensuring all deliverables produced follow standards of the firm and direction from project leader or principal.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-year professional Bachelor of Architecture or accredited Master of Architecture with Urban Design or Urban Planning focus (or specific degree program). 4-year Bachelor of Architecture (BS or BA) could be considered if program is rigorous (minimum 4 studies) and combined with relevant Master of Real Estate Development, Public Policy or similar fields, and additional work experience in urban design, planning, or development.
  • 2-5 years of experience in architecture, urban design, and/or planning.
  • Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the US

Applicants must have:

  • Excellent communication skills with fluency in English (spoken and written) and ability to ensure accuracy and professionalism in all communications.
  • Fluency in AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, and Adobe Creative Suite; knowledge of best practices for working between software programs.
  • Basic understanding of GIS for use as source material for 3D models and drawings.
  • Understanding of materials, construction techniques, and zoning/building codes.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple, fast-paced projects and meet project deadlines.
  • Interest and experience in urban design and city-scale work.
  • A strong desire to develop as a design and planning professional.

Applicants with any of these additional skills are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Advanced GIS for analytics, with a focus on representing complex data sets in a clear way consistent with a project’s graphic language.
  • Grasshopper and/or python scripting with a focus on bringing data into and out of Rhino and building tools for other team members to use.
  • Revit in a large-scale/planning context; the production of drawing sets for rezoning and entitlements.
  • Animation using a range of software to create “dynamic diagrams” to illustrate complex ideas.
  • Architectural and/or street photography with a focus on establishing a narrative for project contexts.
  • Writing that is clear, but lyrical, for a variety of audiences such as business development, project narratives for entitlements, and simple explanations of complex ideas for laypeople as part of stakeholder engagement processes. Writing samples are welcome as part of your application.
  • Copyediting for grammar and style as well accuracy across technical, cultural, and historical content.
  • Advanced research skills online (familiarity with public databases for demographics, property ownership, real estate transactions etc.), in archives, and scholarly journals.
  • Basic understanding of real estate financial models and a fluency with the language and concepts used for coordination with developers and economic analysts.
  • Hand drawing for diagrams and vignettes.
  • Photorealistic rendering capabilities with an emphasis on narrative and human experience.
  • Experience designing and coordinating the fabrication of large-scale models for public settings.
  • Fluency in languages ​​besides English, ability to use those skills in both professional and technical settings as well as for stakeholder engagement.
  • The ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Office structure: We have adopted a hybrid schedule. We are physically in our Union Square office 1p – 6p, Monday through Thursday. We work remotely during the mornings and all day on Fridays. Staff are welcome to work in the office full time if they prefer.

JobLocation: This posting is for our New York, NY office or a fully-remote position in Washington State with occasional in-person meetings with another remote worker.
